CO2 Enrichment
CO2 enrichment in commercial greenhouses is a widely adopted practice to boost growth and increase crop yields by 25% on average. CO2 produced from CHP is vastly more economical vs the use of liquid CO2.
Green Combined Power pioneered the addition of a Co2 enrichment system for a commercial greenhouse that uniquely runs CHP engines on 100% biogas when the manufacturers said it wasn’t possible. We designed, installed and commissioned the Co2 system along with heat recovery in 2017 with great success.
CO2 is essential for photosynthesis, the process by which plants convert light into energy. Increasing CO2 levels (typically to 400- 600 ppm) enhances the rate of photosynthesis, especially under optimal light and temperature conditions.
Many crops such as tomatoes, cucumbers, and lettuce show significant yield increases under enriched CO2 conditions, with improvements of 20-50% depending on species and growing conditions.
CO2 enrichment supports faster vegetative growth, stronger root systems, and earlier flowering and fruiting.
Enriched CO2 conditions improve plant resilience to drought and temperature stress due to better water retention and metabolic efficiency.
The cost of CO2 enrichment is often offset by higher yields, better crop uniformity, and shorter production cycles, leading to increased profitability.
